Like many of our first days in a city, today was spent exploring Salzburg on our own to get a better layout of where we were and what there was to see. Sandeman's doesn't offer any free walking tours here, but the compact city center makes it easy to see a lot in just one afternoon. We enjoyed a quick lunch from My Indigo and a fresh donut pretzel the size of our head to get us going.
We saw Motzart's birthplace, the Collegiate Church, The Church of St. Peter (including the cemetery and catacombs), and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Despite the cold and clouds, we still had an excellent view of Salzburg from the top of the fortress. I would recommend, however, that if you're going just for the views, wait until after 7:00pm when they close the inside of the fortress so you don't have to pay.
For dinner, we grabbed typical Bavarian food - cheese spetzel - from the beer garden patio at St. Paul's Stub'n. The place is worth going to just for their chocolate cake. In fact, this was one of the many instances where we should have implicated the "one entree, two desserts" method of eating.
